R.J. West 2009 Champ
Every year the boats meet up at several locations to see who will be the next WFLS champion. Each boat has a benefit and disadvantage. Where as on boat will shoot of the beach like a rocket! It may be as much as 3-6 m.p.h slower in the straight away but with the amount of speed the first boat to the first turn can pick up will range from 2-4 m.p.h. So the top speed of an SST45 isn't neccasarily as important as its ability to go around the course the fastest. The avg. speed for an SST45 is 68-72 m.p.h. depending on the course speeds can reach 80+.
Propellers are another key factor in the SST45's ability to have just enough bite to competitively leave the beach with the rest of the field without sacraficing mid range and top speed which should come 3/4 of the course. There are several "prop masters" In the industry so each builders style and trade secrets can vary tremendously. Many racers will spend a season testing just a couple of props hoping to make adjustments in the off-season that could mean the difference from the back of the pack to the front.
